In this era, technology has become an important milestone in making daily routines easier. In recent times, people around the world have been introduced to various examples of Artificial Intelligence or artificial intelligence that provide comfort and security in various aspects of life.

Recognizing a number of examples of Artificial Intelligence in daily routines is not difficult. The reason is, AI technology has seeped into various human activities, bringing positive changes to the way we live our daily lives.

In October 2022, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, introduced Optimus, a humanoid robot at the 2022 Tesla AI Day event in Palo Alto, California. It cannot be denied, Artificial Intelligence technology is at the core of this robot's function.

In the concept, the AI robot promoted by Elon Musk is used to make decisions and interact with the surrounding environment, both in the physical and virtual world.

This humanoid robot has the ability to carry out various tasks that are generally carried out by humans, from lifting heavy loads, caring for plants, to lifting metal materials. 

All of this confirms that, whether sooner or later, humans must coexist with Artificial Intelligence along with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology.

The question is, what does artificial intelligence actually mean?

Let's look at the definition, brief history, and various examples in our daily lives.

Understanding and History of Artificial Intelligence

In 1956, a computer scientist named John McCarthy, who is known as one of the main founders of AI, stated that artificial intelligence is a technological concept that aims to imitate the way humans think.

With this 'imitation' concept, Artificial Intelligence is able to give machines the ability to carry out tasks as humans do. In the same year, Alan Turing also provided views on AI.  

He believes that Artificial Intelligence is a field that tries to model the way humans think, then designs machines so they can imitate human behavior.

According to Rich and Knight (1991), Artificial Intelligence is a field of study concerned with how to make computers capable of performing tasks better than those currently performed by humans.

With the various opinions above, it is clear that Artificial Intelligence is closely related to the analysis of human thought processes which are then realized in the form of machines. In historical records, the 1950s had an important role in the development of Artificial Intelligence.

In 1951, the first Artificial Intelligence programs in the form of scripted games and chess programs were successfully developed to run on a Ferranti Mark I machine at the University of Manchester.

At a 1956 conference attended by AI researchers, the term Artificial Intelligence was first introduced by John McCarthy. He also created a programming language called Lisp. At the same time, Alan Turing proposed the concept of the Turing Test to test the behavior of artificial intelligence.

In the 1990s, there was significant progress in various fields of Artificial Intelligence which was then followed by demonstrations of various applications. The peak occurred in 1997 when the Deep Blue chess computer managed to beat Garry Kasparov in 6 games.

The development of AI will continue until 2023, with the emergence of many AI-based applications. One significant AI technology is ChatGPT. Launched by OpenAI at the end of 2022, ChatGPT has succeeded in attracting attention because it is able to function as an assistant in various fields of human work. 

Almost all sectors have now implemented Artificial Intelligence in their technology, starting from the education, health, banking and other sectors.

Application of Artificial Intelligence

in Everyday Life In the realm of Artificial Intelligence, there are two types of AI, namely Strong AI and Weak AI. Strong AI, also known as Artificial General Intelligence, has the ability to imitate various aspects of human cognition.

Meanwhile, Weak AI is designed to complete various specific tasks. In everyday life, we can find various examples of Artificial Intelligence, including: 

1.  Virtual Assistant

Virtual assistants have become an essential component of everyday routines. This technology can help in brainstorming ideas, setting schedules, searching for information, and even reading emails. For example, Chat GPT, which functions as a virtual assistant, allows users to gather information and generate text content with written commands. 

 

AI technology in GPT Chat provides responses and information according to requests. With the duties of an assistant, of course ChatGPT is very helpful and makes daily work easier. 

 

Then, there is another example of Artificial Intelligence in the virtual assistant concept which is present in Siri (Apple), Alexa, Cortona, and Google Assistant. Users can assign the virtual assistant to perform various tasks such as opening applications, playing music, recording appointment schedules and more. 

 

2.  Search Engine

The use of AI in search engines is aimed at sorting and presenting information according to user requests. The more specific the request, the more relevant the information displayed. 

 

Additionally, search engines can even recommend search suggestions based on previous search history, creating a more efficient search experience. AI seems to be able to read minds and know what the user needs. 

 

In fact, this is the result of data that has been collected by AI and studied by search engines with this technology. 

 

3.  Digital Banking (Mobile Banking)

In the world of banking, Artificial Intelligence also plays an important role. With AI technology, financial transactions through digital banking have become more practical. Apart from that, this technology also ensures a high level of security in these transactions. 

 

4.  Music Streaming Application

Music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and JOOX utilize Artificial Intelligence to provide music recommendations based on listener preferences. 

 

AI technology observes the music genres that listeners are interested in listening to certain songs. With this information, suitable music recommendations can be provided.

 

5.  Facial Recognition (Face ID)

When uploading a photo on Facebook, someone will generally tag whoever is in the photo. However, now there is no need to bother tagging someone manually because AI technology will do it automatically. 

 

AI will identify who the person in the photo is and automatically display their Facebook account name. The technology in Facebook that utilizes Artificial Intelligence is called DeepFace. Based on previous data and experience when Facebook users bookmarked the same people, the AI will do quite well.   

Apart from Facebook, currently many cellphones are equipped with a facial recognition feature for security. A locked phone will not unlock if the scanned face is not recognized by the AI.  

The application of Artificial Intelligence in everyday life has brought many benefits and conveniences, enriching our experience in various aspects of daily activities.

Benefits of Using Artificial Intelligence

The use of Artificial Intelligence technology is one of the five promising fields of work according to the World Economic Forum (WEF). This confirms that AI will be increasingly closely linked to human life in the future. 

Sri Kusumadewi (2003) in her research outlined a number of advantages of Artificial Intelligence from a commercial perspective compared to natural human intelligence, including: 

1. Artificial Intelligence is Permanent

In contrast to natural intelligence which tends to change, AI has characteristics that are fixed and do not change as long as the programs and systems in the computer do not change.

2. Artificial Intelligence is Easier to Duplicate and Disseminate

AI technology based on computer programs allows for easier deployment and replication. Artificial Intelligence can even be developed by combining existing codes, not just transferred from one computer to another. 

 This is of course very different from natural intelligence. The process of transferring information and knowledge from one person to another takes a long time. This knowledge will also be difficult to duplicate completely. 

3.  Artificial Intelligence is Consistent

Just like its permanent nature, Artificial Intelligence will remain consistent from the first time it is run. This is because AI is an integral part of computer technology, and will remain consistent without intervention. 

 4.  Artificial Intelligence is Cheaper than Natural Intelligence

The cost of involving humans in completing tasks can be more expensive and time consuming, depending on the complexity of the task assigned. Compared to these costs, AI offers a cheaper and faster alternative. Just by instructing the computer through an Artificial Intelligence system, tasks can be carried out efficiently.

5.  Artificial Intelligence Can Be Documented

All Artificial Intelligence work results can be easily documented and tracked because computers are able to archive every system activity in detail. 

6. Artificial Intelligence helps Work Faste

With one command, Artificial Intelligence is able to complete tasks according to user requests in a short time. This optimizes time and efficiency. 

7. Artificial Intelligence Does a Better Job

Armed with available data and information, AI can carry out tasks with a better level of quality than humans who have the potential to make mistakes. The advantages of Artificial Intelligence have the potential to bring significant progress in various aspects of life. 

The example of Artificial Intelligence above is proof that various things that were previously impossible to do by machines, are now possible.

However, it is important to remember that the impact is not only positive. The convenience offered by AI can also cause humans to become less productive and rely excessively on technology.

Apart from that, the presence of AI also has the potential to replace the role of humans in some jobs, so challenges related to job losses in various sectors must be overcome by increasing skills and adapting to change.

One common fear is that AI will take over human jobs. While some jobs may be affected, AI is also creating new opportunities in various sectors. In 2017, McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) conducted research regarding the presence of AI in human life.

Based on this study, it is projected that by 2030, there will be around 133 million new jobs created through Artificial Intelligence technology. In the same year, around 375 million jobs worldwide are also expected to disappear and be replaced by Artificial Intelligence.

In order not to be eroded by AI technology, humans need to continue to learn new skills that will be needed in the future and improve various abilities. If managed wisely, the development of Artificial Intelligence can bring major positive changes in human life.
