This health problem occurs when stomach acid rises into the esophagus.

This condition causes heartburn, a sour feeling when burping, vomiting, nausea, and various other symptoms.

Here are the causes of Gastric Acid that we should be aware of.

1. Gastric Acid Production

Gastric Acid, also known as GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), is a health problem that affects the human stomach.

This condition occurs due to an overabundance of stomach acid production. At the same time, the function of the lower esophageal valve also decreases. As a result, the excess acid backs up into the esophagus.

Typical signs of this health problem include:
  • Pain in the pit of the stomach
  • Burning in the chest
  • A sour and bitter taste in the mouth
  • A sore throat
  • Belching
  • Nausea or vomiting

2. Gas-producing foods

There are several types of foods that are often the source of stomach bloating. This is because the ingredients in the food itself trigger gas production in the stomach.
The foods I'm referring to include:
  • Types of beans
  • Vegetables
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Fried foods

3. Digestive system intolerance

A sensitive digestive system is one of the causes of acid production in the stomach.
Digestive system intolerance usually occurs with foods containing lactose (such as milk).

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development explains that intolerance is the inability of the body's digestive system to produce the enzyme lactose.

4. Constipation

Constipation, or difficulty defecating, is a common experience, sometimes lasting for days. This is certainly a healthy condition, as it can also trigger stomach disorders.

Infrequent stool excretion from the intestines causes the body to produce ammonia gas. This gas then backs up into the stomach and triggers excessive acid production.

Constipation is usually caused by a diet lacking fiber (vegetables). It can also be caused by colon irritation, with common symptoms being:
  • Stomach cramps
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constant farting

5. Improper Eating Habits

Bloating, which occurs as a result of excess stomach acid production, is actually related to the way we eat.

So, what are these improper eating habits?
  • Eating too quickly
  • Overeating
  • Eating while talking
  • Drinking water while eating
In Islamic etiquette, the Prophet Muhammad strongly discouraged these four eating habits for Muslims. So don't be surprised if you experience stomach discomfort such as bloating.

6. Gas

The medical term for this condition is aerophagia, which refers to the ingestion of air while talking, eating, drinking, or laughing.

This can cause gas, belching, or excessive gas.

How to Treat Gastric Acid

Treating this condition isn't difficult, as it's a mild condition. Doctors recommend several methods when this condition occurs, including:
  • Drinking plenty of warm fluids
  • Reducing portions of foods that trigger acid reflux
  • Consuming baking soda (1/2 teaspoon mixed with water and drunk)
  • Taking Mylanta and similar medications
  • Eating more regularly
  • Improving your eating habits
  • Consuming ginger solution
