SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC FARMING: THE REASON AND HOW TO MAINTAINING

"sustainable organic farming"
Sustainable organic farming is certainly the hope of a vision of creating an environmentally friendly environment and ensuring a better level of human health.

Although people who carry out sustainable organic farming on a large scale can still be counted on the fingers of one hand, this is a big advance. Sustainable organic farming cannot just stop, it must be campaigned continuously so that many people will be interested in implementing it.

Reasons for Choosing Organic  farming

Farming Choosing organic farming is not only based on healthier harvest results but more than that. Starting to re-grow our own food organically means starting to re-harmonize ourselves with the natural world around us.

The natural surroundings where we live, at first the air was so pure without any contamination from emissions from factories and motorized vehicles, the soil was also not mixed with chemicals that came from the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

However, as time goes by, all of this becomes damaged so that this has a big impact on human health as inhabitants of this planet Earth. Quoting from the page kemkes.go.id, a research result published in the journal European Heart Journal found that adults in the same age group who live in areas with high levels of pollution are more susceptible to high blood pressure than those who live in areas with pollution. minimal.

This risk is equivalent to the impact of obesity in humans with a body mass index of 25-30, said Professor Barbara Hofman as the research leader from Heinrich-Heine-University of Dusseldorf, Germany.

So, it is very reasonable that the choice to protect the environment and human health falls on implementing sustainable organic farming. Because :

1. Free of Synthetic Chemicals

As is well known, if a farmer has labeled his harvest with an organic vegetable stamp, it means that the vegetables he sells do not receive synthetic chemicals in the planting process. The farmer's information indirectly gives consumers a sense of calm when consuming it because it means there is no chemical residue in the vegetables.

2. Maintain soil quality

Organic farming returns what it has obtained from the soil back to the soil. This means that all organic materials such as harvest residues, tree pruning residues, dried leaves, household vegetable cutting residues are returned to nature to replenish lost nutrients.

This activity helps the soil quite a lot, because it can maintain and at the same time improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil itself. In contrast to synthetic chemical fertilizers which can only boost plants at one time, organic fertilizers can do this repeatedly.

Apart from that, synthetic chemical fertilizers, if used for a long period of time, will leave residue in the soil. As a result, the land will be difficult to cultivate again and will take some time to recover to its normal state.

3. Promote Biodiversity in Plants

Sustainable organic farming has another benefit, namely maintaining plant varieties to continue to exist. Often modern agriculture only grows one type of plant that has a high selling value. During its journey, this plant was treated using many artificial pesticides to control pests and diseases. In fact, by preventing pests and diseases, one way is by planting refugia plants, such as flowers and herbs.

You can also rotate crops regularly. Crop rotation is quite useful for eliminating disease or pest resistance in certain plant families such as diseases in eggplant and tomatoes (one family)

4. Do not use GMO seeds

One of the principles of organic farming is to use seeds that nature provides without excessive modification. Many plant geneticists have carried out excessive modifications in laboratories to obtain superior seeds.

Even though genetic engineering of seeds through crossbreeding can actually be done, it takes quite a long time so it is less efficient. However, it is feared that using GMO seeds will trigger gene changes in those who consume them. So when you eat organic food there is no longer any fear that the seeds are modified.

Maintaining sustainable organic farming

farming Maintaining the sustainability of organic farming can actually start from home. You can use leftover household waste for fertilizer and implement a vertical garden for narrow areas of land. It only takes a willingness to grow organic food to produce better future generations.

However, in general there are several things that need to be done so that organic farming can continue consistently,

1. Always update knowledge regarding new ways of farming organically
2. Do not burn waste, whether organic or non-organic
3. Always use organic waste to make compost
4. Carry out crop rotation in each growing season
5. Control pests and plant diseases using natural methods and materials
6. Teach our descendants to always love the environment around them
7. If possible, use environmentally friendly technology
8. Learn to make organic fertilizers and pesticides yourself
9. Join an organic community

So, if you have implemented the nine steps above, then that means you can be sure that sustainable organic farming has become your main goal. Love the nature around us and your quality of life will be better.
