5G TECHNOLOGY: DEVELOPMENT, ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES 5G

5G technologyTechnology has begun to be loved by digital communications lovers since it was launched by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology on May 24 2021.

Even though it is still relatively new, 5G technology is starting to be talked about a lot by smartphone users even though this activity is still in shallow knowledge. Since the first trial at the Asian Games in 2018, many cellular telecommunications service providers have begun to prepare to switch to using 5G technology from the previous version 4G.

It is believed that there are many advantages that can be obtained if you use 5G technology, such as fast data transfer with only a small delay, namely 1 ms (milliseconds per second).

This 5G technology was first discovered by Michael Lemke who comes from Germany. He is an expert whose work has been around telecommunications for the Huawei company for almost 24 years.

In 2014, the multinational company Ericsson began to develop 5G technology. Johan Wibergh, head of the Ericsson company business unit, admitted that the development of 5G technology was directed at developing new antenna technology supported by wide bandwidth.

Development of 5G Technology

PT Telkomsel is the first provider to start aggressively using 5G technology services. This is proven by the issuance of a Certificate of Operation Eligibility by the Ministry of Communication and Information because it is considered to have adequate facilities and infrastructure.

5G technology uses IMT 2020 technology on a frequency base of 2,300 MHz, therefore, in order to maximize the development of this technology, it requires 3 frequency layers, namely low band, middle band and high band.

On low band frequencies, the maximum data transmission speed can only be 100 Mbps. The mid band frequency can be even higher, up to 1Gbps. Meanwhile, in the high-band frequency category, the data sent can be 10 Gbps.

It is estimated that the presence of 5G technology will increase users' ability to stream videos, download or download more files. This is because 5G technology is claimed to have 20 times advantages compared to 4G.

For example, 5G downloads can reach 20 Gbps data transport capacity per byte per second. When compared with the 4G network which is only 1 Gbps, this means there is a very big leap in the ability to stream data between 5G and 4G technology.

Not only that, 5G technology has the ability to accommodate 1 million digital devices within a distance of 1 kilometer or 10 times higher than 4G technology which is currently still widely used.

The results of a consumer survey conducted by the global web index in 2020 revealed that 51 percent of consumers now prefer online videos, 31 percent prefer watching TV online.

The fact was also revealed that 64 percent of customers prefer to buy products via online networks after they watch online videos This means that there has been a shift in people's behavior who prefer to use internet media to fulfill their needs.

When this article was published, at least 59 countries in the world had started using 5G technology commercially. 5G applications are starting to be widely used in 20 types of industry, in the health, logistics and education and logistics sectors.

Also in Indonesia, the government is collaborating with digital industry players to start preparing 5G technology infrastructure to support the smart city program, manufacturing industry, health and e-commerce as well as logistics.

Differences between 5G and 4G technology

5G technology is the fifth generation technology which presents broadband technology with a wide range of radio frequencies. Because it uses a broadband basis like a radio service, here many 5G transmitters will be used via antennas at higher frequencies so the speed is very high too.

Meanwhile, 4G technology is the fourth generation technology that uses wireless via a radio tower. What is different here is that 5G technology is built on the 4G network.

So 5G technology uses broad radio frequency waves with a large number of antennas. A striking difference can also be seen from the smaller antenna used for 5G technology compared to 4G technology which relies on larger transmitter towers.

In terms of speed, 5G technology can reach speeds of up to 500 Mbps when compared to 4G technology which is only 30 Mbps. Looking at the capabilities of this 5G technology, if you just watch or download an 800 MB video on the YouTube social media channel, you can be sure it will run smoothly and not stutter, it will probably only take less than 1 second.

Behind some of the advantages of 5G technology that have been reviewed earlier, there are also disadvantages of this technology such as:

1. Power low translucency

This means that 5G technology is not optimal in areas with lots of buildings and trees. The signal tends to be weak and unable to penetrate the barriers of buildings and trees. This will be the source of the reduced data transmission speed.

2. Security risks are easy to penetrate

Due to the superior data transfer speed, the security level will be easily breached. Hackers will be interested in breaking into user data on this high-speed network.

3. High Costs Because

it uses many antennas, building 5G technology infrastructure will be more expensive than 4G.

How 5G technology works

Like internet-based technology, 5G technology will use cellular sites to send data via radio waves. The data sent will first be modified in the form of a certain code, then sent via various radio wave frequencies, low band, middle band or high band.

Well, these various frequencies actually have different functions, depending on the type of communication, such as maritime navigation communications, TV broadcasts or cellular data. With the presence of 5G technology in a country, it can be expected that it will encourage even greater digital economic development in the future.
